You will find in this section answers to frequently asked questions regarding :

CHOICE OF A GARAGE DOOR
Q - My garage is not insulated. Should I opt for a garage door with or without insulation?
A - The opening where you will install the garage door is basically the equivalent of a large hole in the garage outer wall. You should prefer an insulated garage door if any of the following situations applies :
  • Your garage is attached to your house or there is a room situated immediately above the garage. Any cold air seeping into the garage would cool down your home. An insulated garage door will maintain a level temperature inside the garage, therefore keeping your home's temperature from fluctuating.
  • An insulated garage door will muffle outdoor noises. If your garage doubles up as a workshop, an insulated garage door will make it a more comfortable workspace.
  • From the inside, an insulated garage door offers a better look than an non-insulated door.
  • For obvious reasons, an insulated garage door is safer than a non-insulated door.
  • Finally, the inner surface of an insulated garage door will remain cool to touch, even on a scorching day.
Q - Why should I buy CEDO aluminum garage door?
A - Here are several good reasons to choose CEDO aluminum garage door :
  • CEDO aluminum garage door warranty is superior to any steel garage door warranty, as aluminum will stand the test of time regarding rust.
  • CEDO aluminum doors come in the largest choice of pastel colors, increasing the possible matches between your garage door and your residence finish and trims.
  • An aluminum door is lighter in weight, making it easier on handling and installation.
  • The aluminum garage door being lighter, it bears less weight on the hardware and parts.
  • Any metal garage door, either aluminum or steel, requires less maintenance than a wooden garage door.
Q - I presently have a one-piece door. Can it be replaced by a sectional garage door?
A - Definitely. A professional installer will see to install proper tracks and springs intended for a sectional garage door.

Q - What are the benefits of a sectional garage door comparatively to a one-piece door?
A - There are numerous benefits to choosing a sectional garage door over a one-piece door :
  • If damage occurs, a sectional garage door only requires replacement of the damaged section while the one-piece door will call for a full replacement, this being obviously more costly.
  • The demand for the one-piece door constantly decreasing, it will become more and more difficult to find spare parts for these as time goes by.
  • The sectional garage door is safer at opening than the one-piece door.
  • The sectional garage door fits flush to the door frame instead of overlapping the frame on the outside. It is therefore safer and easier to open, especially if there is a thick cover of snow on the ground.
  • It is easier to install a garage door opener for a sectional door.
  • The sectional garage door has an all-around weather strip and has a better insulation at the perimeter.
Q - Are CEDO garage doors available in non standard sizes?
A - CEDO is a very accommodating manufacturer. Our garage doors come in standard and non standard sizes. Garage door sections are available in 3 different heights : 18", 21" and 24" (456 mm, 532 mm or 608 mm).

Our polystyrene insulated garage doors (model Cedotherm) are available in any desirable width, in millimetres or half inches, and in height in 3" (76 mm) increments. Upon demand, our polyurethane insulated doors (models Progressive and F-1) will be cut to measure in height (bottom and/or top panel) and they are available in any desirable width.

Q - What about garage door windows?
A - If security is for you a concern, be aware that a Thermo window is much more stronger and resistant to breakage compared to a standard single or double window. If your garage doubles up as a workshop, adding windows to your garage door will increase natural light. CEDO offers an array of windows and inserts, sure to meet all needs and tastes for either residential, commercial or industrial in utility or more decorative models. For example, available leaded glass or tinted windows will match your home's front entrance door.

INSULATION
Q - What is the difference between polystyrene and polyurethane?
A - Polystyrene and polyurethane are the two most commonly used insulating material when it comes to insulated garage doors. Both products, equally used by CEDO, are CFC11 free and totally safe for the environment. Following is the comparison between these two products :
  • Polystyrene comes in a solid state and is moulded to suit the needs of the garage door industry. As for the polyurethane, it comes as a foam. CEDO designed an exclusive process : polyurethane foam is applied with an automated lay-down system and a short curing time, which fills the panel thoroughly and prevents the occurrence of air pockets. The use of this particular process, a CEDO exclusive, results in a sturdier panel structure. Comparatively, the most commonly used foam injection process is prone to causing the "Swiss cheese effect", the presence of air pockets in the insulating foam lowering the panel rigidity and insulation factor.
  • Regarding energetic efficiency, polyurethane wins over polystyrene. Our door model Cedotherm Series C3000 offers R-8 (RSI 1.40) insulating factor while our polyurethane door models show the highest factor at R-17.09 (RSI 3.0), making of CEDO the best insulated garage door!
  • Delaminating : air pockets in the polyurethane foam might cause door panels to delaminate, but this is greatly reduced by CEDO's exclusive polyurethane lay-down process. As a preventive measure, we strongly advise you against choosing a dark door color if the garage door subject to long hours exposure in direct sunlight. As for polystyrene, quality of the gluing process in an important factor when considering delaminating of door panels. CEDO uses contact cement full panel pasting process, which makes panels a lot more resistant to delaminating. Furthermore, CEDO polystyrene panels have double anchoring brackets which fasten inner and outer steel overlays very securely.
Q - What about the insulation at the panels’ perimeter?
A - A garage door energetic efficiency will depend of the insulating material of course, but also of the inter panel joints, of the inter panel weather strip and of the weather strip at the door perimeter. CEDO has designed and patented a inter panel joint, in a male/female shape, which greatly improves the insulation between panels. Besides, CEDO offers a perimeter double lip rubber weather strip taking on the exact shape of door frame, which is especially useful when it comes to renovating an older building. Bottom weather strip, a superior quality ribbed U-shaped rubber available in two different widths, will seal door perfectly to garage floor, even to the most uneven surface.

Each and every component has been carefully selected for its high ability to stand up to great temperature fluctuation (ribbed U-shaped rubber stays soft at temperatures as low as -50° C (-120° F) and its memory (weather strip returns to its original shape after each and every opening of the door).

Q - What other factors should be considered regarding panel insulation?
A - CEDO panel end stiles are made of kiln dried wood, providing a stronger anchoring surface for hardware, a quieter door and a much better thermal break than steel panel end caps, steel acting as a cold conductor.

GARAGE DOOR OVERLAY
Q - Is CEDO doors’ outer coating rustproof?
A - Aluminum is rustproof and anti-corrosive. And CEDO uses galvanized hot dipped steel. These two metals are both pre-painted with two coats of baked polyester paint, according to door models, which add up to their resistance to rust and corrosion. Furthermore, all steel hardware components are made of G60 hot dipped galvanized steel, providing an improved protection against rust.

HARDWARE
Q - I am considering replacing my old garage door. Do you advise I keep the old hardware?
A - The wisest choice is to replace the hardware and tracks at the same time you change the garage door. This way, your installation will be fully covered by warranty and your hardware will be properly adjusted to the new door weight. For a given size, the weight of a garage door will vary according to door model. It is inadvisable to keep the old hardware when getting a new garage door. Very often, certain make of garage door will call for a specific hardware type.

Even more, if you initially have the new door installed while keeping the old hardware, and later decide to replace the hardware, this operation will then be more costly than if you would have had it done from the very beginning.

Q - Which springs do I choose : torsion or extension?
A - Torsion springs are of a superior quality since they are more well-balanced and are better security wise. They are tightly wound springs that will wear well without overly expanding or compressing while operating the garage door. Generally speaking, consumers are more familiar with extension springs. These springs are attached on each side of the garage door and are extended alongside the door tracks when the garage door is closed. For added security, CEDO includes security cables as part of extension springs standard equipment. CEDO larger doors automatically come with torsion springs in order to provide you with a more stable and reliable spring system.

Q - There is little headroom above my garage door. What is the minimum headroom necessary to install a sectional garage door?
A - Tracks for regular headroom require a headroom space anywhere from 8.5" to 16" (196 mm to 368 mm), between top of garage door and garage ceiling. But you can get different sets of tracks regarding particular needs due to garage dimensions. Following are different type of tracks available regarding specific needs :
  • Low headroom tracks (where space between top of door and ceiling is inferior to standard headroom measurements provided above - will also differ according to spring type, torsion or extension).
  • Hi-lift tracks (when there's lots of space between the top of garage door and garage ceiling but you prefer a door standing horizontally when open).
  • Vertical lift tracks (when there's lots of space between the top of garage door and garage ceiling and you opt for a vertical opening of your garage door).
  • Tracks following the roof slope (when garage ceiling has a definite angle in the slope and that you prefer the garage door to follow that angle during opening).
  • A professional garage door installer will present you with the different track options available according to your garage characteristics.
Q - Different rollers are available on the market. What is the difference between nylon rollers and steel rollers?
A - Steel rollers have a built-in ball bearing system. The usual garage door industry standard is using 7 steel ball bearings for a steel roller. CEDO steel roller is made of a 10 steel ball bearing system, which provides a quieter operation of the garage door. Besides, for the quietest possible operation, you should select nylon rollers, especially if a bedroom is adjoining to your garage.

INSTALLATION
Q - Should I install my new sectional garage door on my own?
A - A garage door installed by a professional installer means :
  • More security : Installing a garage door might be risky business for a rookie, especially when it comes to installing springs. Inexperienced installers have been known to sustain serious injuries while installing a garage door.
  • Accurate installation : a professional installer guarantees you with an accurate installation and calibration of your garage door and door opener. Proper door measurements and appropriate door adjustment will prevent any infiltration of air, dust and water into your garage. A properly balanced garage door will also extend the life of your hardware and will assure you enjoyment for years to come.
  • Time saving : an experienced garage door installer should be able to install a CEDO door for residential purposes in approximately 3 to 4 hours, which could take you up to a full day of work!
  • Guaranteed labour : if your installation ever proves to be faulty following damage occurring to your garage door, tracks or hardware, your garage door warranty might simply not apply. On the other hand, labour carried out by a professional installer should be fully covered.
